UPDATE - Ice Conditions Upper Sturgeon River - January 18th 2018

The West Nipissing Police Service continues to caution residents about ice conditions on the upper Sturgeon River after reporting that the West Nipissing Power Generation experience mechanical difficulties on January 17.

Yesterday the Power Generation experienced problems controlling the water flow at the Sturgeon Falls dam, this resulted in water levels rising in the upper portion of the river. The water flows are now being controlled, however the ice conditions have changed on the river. Ice thickness, cracks and ice near shorelines have all been altered by the event.

Police remind people using frozen waterways that the fluctuating temperatures and yesterday’s incident can make ice unstable and weak. Anyone planning outdoor activities that include being on ice should be very mindful of their environment.

People should check the ice conditions ahead of time, should wear a flotation suit, have ice picks with them and be familiar with their use, bring a fully charged cellular telephone with them. When travelling on or over ice try not to travel alone and always let someone know where you are heading and when you are expected back.
